In King of Swords, the concept of free will is examined in the story of two lovers who witness the
events of
the Spanish-American War in Puerto Rico.
The tryst between Carmen and Eduardo results in a daughter, Juana, who grows up to be as unfortunate in love as her parents had been. His daughter's marriage in crisis, Eduardo is forced to relive a moment in his life that he had spent years attempting to forget. The work explores the function of Jungian archetypes in everyday life. The war and its consequences are graphically described, but the focus of the narrative is the personal lives of the lovers, whose attempt to remain observers is shattered by impulses beyond their control. |
